50+ Spring Outfits From The Best Spring Capsule Wardrobe

“Don’t you get bored with your wardrobe?”

I get this question all the time when people find out that I dress from a capsule wardrobe. The idea of dressing from only a 20-piece wardrobe makes most people think that I wear the same thing over and over again, and that they could never even attempt to dress from a capsule because they would get bored. “I need variety,” they tell me.

Here’s the truth: a capsule wardrobe can give you immense variety if it’s well put together. When I mention that my capsules are about 15-pieces, people get this idea that I repeat outfits all the time. But in reality, I rarely repeat outfits. What I repeat, is pieces.

Where wardrobe boredom comes from

Most people have a few go-to outfits that they cycle through often. They shop and dress in terms of completed ‘outfits’; meaning, they go to their closets each morning and pick a combination that they already know works and put it on once again. If you end up wearing the exact same outfit that you wore the week prior, it does feel like you’re repeating yourself, and that’s when boredom sets in.

What a well-put together capsule allows you to do is think of the pieces in your wardrobe as individual items, and not in combination with something else. You could wear the same sweater you wore last week today, but since last week you wore it with a pencil skirt and boots, and today you’re wearing it with jeans and sneakers, you’re not actually repeating an outfit. You are just repeating a piece, so you don’t get bored as easily.

How long you can go without repeating an outfit with a capsule wardrobe

There are two key factors that affect how many outfits you can put together from a capsule wardrobe.

Capsule Size

A 30-item capsule wardrobe will inevitably give you more combinations than a smaller, 15-piece capsule, but it is not as simple as only doing the math. In an ideal world, every top would go with every bottom and every shoe for any occasion, but that is rarely the case. There are usually items in your wardrobe that don’t match well with some others, due to cut, color, etc.

Versatility

The easier it is for you to combine an item in your capsule, the more outfit options it will give you. This is why versatility is a key factor when selecting items to include in your capsule. While including some statement pieces is a must in order to make the capsule have some interest, it is essential to build about 75% of a minimalist wardrobe from basic, versatile pieces.

An incredibly versatile Spring capsule

This could easily be one of the most versatile capsules I have ever put together. Four of the 5 tops in this capsule combine well with every single one of the bottoms, so that alone gives me 19 possible outfit combinations. If we then add the three light layers to the mix the possibilities expand drastically. Not every one of those 19 outfits pairs nicely with each layer, but if only nine of those can be enhanced by two of the layers, that gives us an additional 18 possible outfits.

As you add outerwear and shoes to the mix, the possibilities expand from there. This particular capsule had so many different permutations that I could only realistically show you about 50, but that alone is enough for going 7 weeks without repeating a single outfit! Could you realistically do that with your current wardrobe?
