Capsule Wardrobe Outfit Combinations | Summer 2020

If there ever were to be a test for the effectiveness of a capsule wardrobe, making an outfit combinations video would be it for sure. We can plan and shop for as many pieces as we want that we think will go well together, but until we actually try to combine them with many other items in our wardrobes and create as many outfits as possible, we won’t know for sure if the capsule is effective or not. There is also an added benefit of seeing something on us but not seeing it through the mirror- which is very helpful in my opinion.

Putting together these videos really forces me to see what works, what sparks a lot of creativity, what I’m not comfortable in, and which items I love in a vacuum, but not really in combination with my existing wardrobe. This summer 2020 capsule wardrobe was no exception.

I love the way this capsule turned out, but I am noticing, especially after editing the video, that it is definitely a reflection of my life today. These days I still spend most of my time at home, since New York City is still partially shut down due to Covid-19 concerns and I doubt that my job will return any time soon. This capsule is perfect for these circumstances- it gives me a lot of practical combinations that work for being at home, without needing to worry about dress codes or offices where the temperature is so frigid that it barely feels like it is summer at all. If society were to reopen as it was before, my summer capsule would probably look a lot different.

This is definitely the capsule of comfort. While previous summers I may have gravitated towards more silhouette-friendly clothing, this year I know that I won’t be going many places and will barely put shoes on. While I want to feel like I got dressed in the morning, I still want my clothes to feel comfortable indoors and out. In that regard, I do feel like I nailed it. I have had other seasonal capsules where by the end of the day I am eager to change into my loungewear, but this is not one of them. And I love that. Also, the bright colors are having a big impact on my mood. If I’m barely going outside and putting on minimal makeup, brighter colors definitely make me feel like there is still an element of interest, without me having to put in the effort.

The two most comfortable and colorful pieces in this capsule- my favorites! Though probably not the most flattering.

In my shopping video a few weeks ago, I explained that I was toying with the idea of putting together a capsule of only grab-and-go pieces; meaning: only dresses, jumpsuits, rompers, etc. Boy am I glad I didn’t go that route. I’ll admit that I struggled to put together many ‘outfits’ based on the single item pieces, since this particular capsule doesn’t have a lot of layers. I can style the grab-and-go pieces differently, but layers would really be what would change the whole outfit. I think I would have gotten bored.

These are two of my favorite outfits. I tend to not wear white, but I love a loud print, and it worked well with both!

Despite all these discoveries, I have to say that putting together one of these videos always makes me love and appreciate my clothes even more. There is something about tangibly seeing the many combinations I can put together with just a  few pieces that makes me feel like there is an abundance of clothes. All of a sudden, it doesn’t feel like my wardrobe is minimal at all.

I hope you enjoy watching this video and that you got a kick of the little pooch cameo! She for sure likes to interrupt but not look at the camera… We are still working on that. Thanks for watching!
