15 Piece Capsule Wardrobe: Summer 2020

When I began thinking about what my summer capsule wardrobe would look like, I noticed that I wasn’t looking forward to pulling out the warm weather pieces from storage and wearing them again. When I thought about why, I realized that I’ve had most of my summer pieces for at least five years, with some of the oldest ones being from the year I graduated from college. My life has changed a lot in the last five years - it looks completely different from the way it did back then. It’s only natural that the person I am today has also evolved from the person I was back then. Yet somehow, the summer wardrobe managed to stay exactly the same.

Beyond that, a lot of the pieces I had were looking extremely tired, some I no longer liked, and some others fit my body in a way that I am no longer comfortable with (hello, flirty mini-skirt!). It was time for a major wardrobe refresh. I did the biggest clothes shop I had done in years and tried to put some sense into this capsule, as I documented in the video from last week.

I thought I could get everything together in time to present to you a finalized summer capsule wardrobe by the summer solstice, but the fashion gods were not on my side for this one. A lot of the pieces I ordered did not fit (despite ordering based on the size chart), some of them have yet to arrive, and some of them still need tailoring. This served as a good reminder for me though; as much as I would love it if every seasonal wardrobe was just hanging in my closet waiting for the season to start, putting together an excellent capsule wardrobe, and a minimalist wardrobe that works for us, is not always that simple.

The truth is that when we are trying to be more intentional about the things we let into our wardrobes, and our lives at that, finding the exact right thing can be a challenge. In my personal experience, the less I own, the more selective I become about quality, look, and versatility; and all of that has to fit through my most restrictive gate: the budget.

Our wardrobes are rarely an item on a to-do list that can be completed and crossed off, never to be thought of again. More so, they are like a boomerang errand. As seasons, styles, tastes, and our bodies change, our wardrobes will and should change with them. Putting together a collection that is just right for us will take time - and that’s ok!

Whenever I’m feeling uninspired by my clothes, I find that putting together a capsule wardrobe video always makes me love and appreciate them more. I had never put together a capsule with this many colors, but I have to say, it works! And I love it!
