Getting Rid of Your Split Ends At Home

One of the advantages of wearing our hair long is that we can go several weeks between visits to the salon and for the most part, the cut holds up. Sure, the shape may get a little weird or we may need a bang trim at some point, but the odds are in our favor that it will look pretty decent.

However, if our hair is damaged and the ends have split, not only will our haircut not grow out gracefully, but we run the risk of damaging the parts of it that are still healthy if the problem is not addressed.

The bad news is that once a hair splits, there is really no way to repair it (products that sell otherwise are lying). The only way to get rid of a split end is to cut above the damage - which is why a hair cut is always recommended over a hair trim. A visit to the salon isn’t always in the cards, but there is a way you can give some maintenace to your strands at home so you can extend the life of your haircut until you can see you hairdresser.

In this video, I show you how to do an at-home version of a technique called ‘dusting,’ in which 1/8in of the damaged hair is cut off so as to not loose length or change the shape, and I share my favorite tried and true hair care tips for preventing split ends from happening in the first place. Our manes, much like our skin, are put under a lot of stress from day-to-day life, and just like our skin, they need regular treatments beyond washing to nourish them and keep them strong.

Proper hair care, like brushing properly and using hair ties that are apply less pressure on your hair, have the biggest impact when it comes to preventing split ends.
