The Wardrobe Basics NOT In My Capsule Wardrobe

I dress from a 15-piece capsule wardrobe every season, and I often get asked “Are these all the clothes that you will wear during the season?” and the answer is: no!

In addition to my seasonal capsules, I have a small collection of wardrobe basics that stay in my wardrobe year round that I know will work well with any seasonal capsule I put together. While these are not the “stars” of my wardrobe, they are there to give me a few more options for warmth, necessary laundry extensions, or weekend wear if I need it.

What to consider when putting together your closet essentials

Everyone needs a good collection of wardrobe basics - these are the workhorses of your wardrobe and the pieces that will make it actually versatile. If you’re beginning to put together your own, here’s a few things to keep in mind:

Color

Pick your basics in colors that will work well for your wardrobe year round. Mine, for example, are mostly grey, black, and white since these are colors that work well for all of my seasonal capsules, but this does not mean that all of your basics have to be neutral. As long as they are in versatile colors (colors that easily integrate into the majority of your wardrobe) they will do their job perfectly!

Material

Pick basics in materials that are easy to wear and easy to care for. You will wear your basics a lot, so it’s important that they are made of fabrics that you don’t have to fuss too much about. The easier the fabric, the more wear you can get out of it.

Personal Uniform

If you can, pick a few pieces that can create your personal uniform easily. Mine, for example, is a sleeveless top with a pair of skinny jeans, and I can create that look many times over with my collection of basics. This ensures that I always have something that I am comfortable in.

Cut

Select items of a cut that flatters you well and that you feel amazing in! Your basics will set the tone for your wardrobe, so make sure these reflect your personal style as much as possible. If you like more of a tomboy look, pick more square tops, or perhaps camis with lace detail if you consider yourself more boho.

The easiest way to upgrade your wardrobe

In my opinion, the easiest way to upgrade your wardrobe is to invest in really good basics. If your clothes are looking tired, fit poorly, or are of cheap quality, any statement piece you pair with it will look the same. If instead you focus on making your basics look incredible, even the most basic of outfits will make you feel great and look put together.
