Summer 2021 Capsule Wardrobe!

What comes to mind when you think of summer? For me, a series of fun activities flash in my mind, activities that I don’t do much of in other seasons. Picnics at NYC parks with friends, tons of bike rides, many outdoor dinners, and as many food and music festivals as I can fit in.

My summer capsule wardrobe needs to accommodate all of these activities, but at the same time give me enough options to be properly dressed for an office (an office in the film industry, mind you, so it’s pretty casual), and give me a few options in case I need to be a little bit more dressed up than usual.

Using as many items from my existing wardrobe as I could, I created a 16-piece capsule wardrobe for Summer 2021, and I have to say, I love the way it turned out! This capsule has tons of color and pattern, and the materials are lightweight and breathable, perfect for staying cool on really hot summer days.

The Color Palette

The summer items in my current wardrobe seem to be the most nonsensical of the bunch. There’s items of all styles, textures, and colors, and I’ve been in the process of making my summer capsule a cohesive portion of my larger wardrobe. I did that by sticking to a color palette as much as possible.

I really liked the color palette from my Spring 2021 Capsule Wardrobe, so I wanted to stick to it as much as possible. I kept as many of the same colors as I could, changing the hues only slightly, and I let the items that I already owned dictate the accent colors of the palette. I didn’t worry too much if the accent colors didn’t combine well with the other colors in the capsule because they were mostly present in items that I could wear on their own or with neutrals (dresses and jumpsuits). I love how it turned out!

Summer Capsule Breakdown

For this capsule, I modified the Capsule Wardrobe Formula to better fit my needs and my dressing tendencies for summer. The breakdown for this 16-piece capsule is as follows:

  • 4 Tops

  • 4 Bottoms

  • 3 Dresses & Jumpsuits

  • 2 Layers

  • 2 Pairs of shoes

  • 1 Special Item

Without the special item, the breakdown is very similar to my usual formula, with one additional dress instead of a layer. I still stand by the formula and believe that is the best way to get started with capsule dressing, but at this point, I have a pretty good sense of what my wardrobe needs will be for any given season!
