The One Thing That Will Make You Look 1000x Better In Your Clothes

I’m sure you’ve noticed this: actresses in film and TV look fantastic in their clothes, even if what they have on is a simple white T-shirt. It would be easy to think that the reason they look so good is that actresses have perfect figures and look drastically different than the majority of women.

I work in the film industry and let me tell you: most actresses look just like you and me when they are not in full hair, makeup, and costume. They look just like any other regular human, but what makes them look fantastic in their clothes is this:

All actresses wear a good fitting bra.

Really, that’s it. That’s the secret. The first thing any costume designer does when they have to dress an actress, is send them to get fitted for a good bra. Because, and I quote: “If you’re not wearing a good bra, you won’t look good in the clothes.”

Wearing the right bra is the easiest fix to apply in your wardrobe for maximum impact. To help you with that, I’ve put together this Essential Bra Guide; it’s full of tips & tricks to help you know if your bra fits properly, the best care practices to make your bra last you (cause those things are hella expensive), and tips to help you make the bra shopping experience a lot more pleasant.

Finding the proper fit for your bra

If there is one item in your wardrobe where you really can’t afford to get the wrong size, it’s with your bra. The band of your bra should fit snugly, but not tightly, around your torso on the loosest hook, and it should do most of the work when it comes to holding up your breasts. Your boobs should fit fully into the cups with absolutely no spillage, gaps between your body and the bra, and should not sit on any breast tissue at all. Instead, the band should lay flat against your ribcage.

See how the band goes up ever so slightly at the center? That means the band is too stretched out and needs to be replaced.

More importantly, the bra should feel comfortable when you have it on! That feeling of wanting to rip off your bra as soon as you get home? That means you are wearing the wrong bra size. If your bra isn’t comfortable or it’s hurting you, ditch it and look for one that works. The perfect one for you is out there, I promise!

Proper care & storage for your bras

Bras are intricate garments that can easily lose their shape if put in the washing machine, and they are made of a stretchy material that can lose its integrity in the heat of the dryer. For best results, hand-wash your bras every 3-5 wears and hang to dry.

If you must, must, MUST put your bras in the machine (which I really do NOT recommend), use a bra wash bag to keep the shape intact as much as possible, and use only cold water before hanging it to dry.

As far as storage goes, never fold your bras! Pushing the cups in the opposite direction can cause the material to form lumps, loose the smooth texture, and will need to be replaced sooner. Instead, stack your bras with the cups nested - this will make them easy to find and will keep the shape intact for as long as possible!

When to replace your bras

How long a bra is going to last you will depend on a few things: how well you take care of it, how often you wear it, etc. My rule of thumb is that a bra that has been well taken care of should last you between 100-120 wears, which is roughly about a year if you have a few that you rotate between.

When it does come time to shop for a new bra, I recommend you get fitted by a professional every time. It’s very common for our bra sizes to change often, and like I mentioned before, wearing the exact right size is absolutely critical for making your clothes look good and helping ease the weight of your breasts on your back.

I recommend you have at least 5 bras in your collection:

  • Two plain t-shirt, ‘go with everything’ bras. At least one of them should be nude.

  • One low cut bra for deep V-Necks, blouses with buttons, etc.

  • One strapless bra for shirts with more interesting cuts (alternatively, you can sub a racerback bra).

  • One additional bra in a fun color or material that is just for making you feel special. Because, why not?

I recommend you buy your bras in bulk - more than one at a time, and take advantage of store sales or promotions (buy one get one 50% off? YES PLEASE). Bras can be incredibly expensive, but just like shopping at Costco, buying bras in bulk can help you save a good chunk of change. But please, don’t buy your bras at Costco. You’ll get better fits and quality at lingerie boutiques and department stores.

There is so much to say about the topic of bras - from sister sizing, to best bras for your boob shape, to the right way to put on a bra (because there IS a right way!).
