This Versatile Sweater Is The Best Addition To Any Capsule Wardrobe
You may already know this about me: I don’t like to give you “must-have” wardrobe lists. Those lists of “10 Items Every Woman Must Definitely Have In Their Closets”? I hate them. They make me grunt out loud, roll my eyes, and immediately click off the post.
So imagine my surprise when I found myself thinking that the Sézane Gaspard Jumper is a must-have item for any capsule wardrobe.
I KNOW! It was such an odd thought for me to have that I had to sit on it for a moment. I don’t usually recommend a specific product for every single person. It’s not just something I like to do.
But the longer I own this sweater, the more ways I find to style it and the more I like it. I have been amazed at how many ways I have found to wear this one item, and how quickly it has become the go-to item in my closet. It’s the top version of a favorite pair of jeans - yes, it’s that versatile! And while I don’t recommend the exact same pair of jeans for every person’s capsule, some type of denim pant is a good wardrobe staple to have. This sweater is no different.
What makes the Gaspard Jumper so special?
At its core, the Gaspard Jumper is deceptively simple: a round-neck cardigan made of mohair, alpaca and polyamide. But, the devil is in the details with this sweater. The Gaspard is designed to be worn both as a cardigan open or closed, or as a pullover jumper with the buttons facing backwards. This is possible because of two things: the cut of the jumper, and the design of the closures. Cardigans that are not designed to be worn closed gape open in between the buttons, making them fit poorly when worn closed or backwards. The construction of the Gaspard minimizes gaping, and the looser fit makes it possible to be styled in many ways without losing its integrity.
My favorite ways to style the Gaspard Jumper
Aside from beautiful, the sweater is surprisingly docile. Unlike most other items that slip, shift, or come undone after you’ve styled them in a specific way in the first few minutes of wearing them, the Gaspard seems to hold whatever position you want to put it in. Here are a few ways that I like to wear it:
Open as a cardigan over a tank top (classic);
Closed and backwards as a jumper, over a collared button down shirt;
With the first two buttons open and the rounded neckline tucked inwards to make a V-Neckline;
With the same V-Neckline described above, but facing backwards;
Buttoned all the way with a neck scarf;
Buttoned to the front except for the top two buttons, over a camisole with interesting detail for a fun surprise when it shows;
With a few of the bottom buttons closed and styled off the shoulder.
I showed a few of these ways in this week’s video, but to see more, check out my Spring Capsule Outfits video.
About sizing and picking a color
I always recommend you select your size when online shopping by taking your measurements and looking at the size chart, but for the Gaspard that did not work so well for me. My measurements put me between a size small and a medium, and the website recommends that if you are in between two sizes, you go for the smaller size. I ordered a size small, and it was too large for my liking. I tried two smaller sizes and settled for the smallest available, an XXS. For reference, I wear a 30F bra size, which means that my frame is relatively small, but my boobs really take up a lot of space, which was why the size chart was so off for me. For someone with a smaller chest circumference than mine, I have a feeling the XXS would have looked too large still.
I recommend getting one down from the recommended size on the website for a looser fit, and two sizes down if you like your clothes to be more fitted.
The Gaspard also comes in 16 different colors. If I had realized that this sweater would become such a versatile piece for my capsules, I would have gotten it in a neutral color that I would be likely to wear year-round. I have it in Sage Green, which is really more teal, but I think getting it in black would have made me wear it even more.
If you are considering getting your own, I recommend getting it in a color that is a staple of your wardrobe and will give you as many combinations as possible to make it even more versatile.
