Prime Wardrobe Capsule Combinations - and my Honest Opinion About Shopping for Clothes on Amazon

“I am so sad to see this video…” “The devil punishes sinners…”

So began some of the comments I have received since posting a Prime Wardrobe Capsule video last week.

Let me tell you, it was not easy reading those comments. I knew that posting anything Amazon related would be controversial, but I did not expect comments from my own community to have such a myopic point of view on what ultimately, is a tool.

I do not deny the massive effects that a giant retailer like Amazon has had on small businesses, the nature of commerce in general, employee welfare, etc. The nature of change is that it comes with a lot of repercussions, and while Amazon has been a very convenient tool for many- both individuals and small businesses alike- I do agree that some of those consequences need to be regulated and kept in check.

At the end of the day though, I see Amazon, with all of its good and all of it’s bad (and all of it’s ugly!), not as a company to boycott, but as a development to manage. The fact of the matter is that life is changing constantly, due to the nature of our work lives, technology, globalization, our values, now the pandemic, etc., and to expect the experience of shopping to remain the same it has been for centuries while everything else changes around it, is simply unrealistic.

My mission with this platform is to help you create a wardrobe that you love, one that reflects your taste, season of life, and your budget. If using a tool like Amazon to build it helps you because it saves you time, or fits your budget, I say: more power to you! But use it mindfully. Be selective about the pieces you are keeping and make sure that when you buy something, that you will truly get many uses out of it, because that is how we can ultimately make an impact as a collective on many of the issues the fashion industry is facing.

The Prime Wardrobe Capsule

As is tradition on this channel, every time I show you a capsule that I create, I like to show you the many outfits that can be put together with that capsule. While I did not end up being a fan of many of the pieces on this capsule, I still wanted to make this video because showing the clothing on a model is the best way to see how the fabric looks, if the construction is a little off, etc. I’m not gonna lie, I’m not super happy with these outfits and the way my body looks in them, but I think that on it’s own is a good thing to note. When you take the time to seek and buy quality pieces that work for your body, it can make a HUGE difference in the way you look, and ultimately, in the way you feel about yourself.

Items of clothing worth recommending from Prime Wardrobe

Out of the 8 items in my Prime Wardrobe box, I only ended up liking four enough to recommend, and kept only one myself.

Tried and true pair of Levi’s High Waisted Skinny Jeans*. The only reason I didn’t keep these is because I think my body type would be better served with a curvy cut, but otherwise excellent.

Kenneth Cole Levon Boots in Black* - absolutely excellent. I loved the construction, design and how sturdy the sole was. I did not keep them because they were too tight on my calf, so it was a sizing issue.

I was impressed with this merino wool lightweight cardigan from Lark & Ro* - an Amazon brand. I loved the way it looked open, but when it came to closing it and wearing it as a top, my boobs made the gaps in between the buttons pop open, which I did not like. I think it would be better for someone with a smaller chest.

My Favorite Amazon Fashion Item

Can you tell I like it by the big smile on my face?

Can you tell I like it by the big smile on my face?

I was very pleasantly surprised by this Peplum Sweater from Goodthreads* - another Amazon brand. When I put it on, it feels like I’m wearing a sweatshirt, or what I could call a “lounging sweater,” but looks very nice. It’s the perfect thing to throw on when you want to be comfortable, but need to look put together. I find the silhouette very flattering, since most oversize sweaters make me lose shape and look frumpy underneath them.

So, do I recommend Amazon?

While I don’t see myself shopping a lot from Amazon clothing in the future, I do see myself using it from time to time, especially when looking for a very specific item. My existing pair of over-the-knee black boots has reached the end of its life, and come Fall, I will need a replacement. I do see myself ordering eight pairs of black boots to try on at home from Prime Wardrobe, in hopes of keeping only one. For someone who doesn’t enjoy shopping, I think this service will come in very handy, especially when shopping with intention.

I would love to hear your perspective on shopping on Amazon, the changing nature of retail, and where you stand on shopping for clothing from fast fashion retailers - with the intention of keeping items for a long time! Leave me a comment below with your thoughts, I would love to hear from you.
