How To Style Culottes 6 Ways
There is one thing (and one thing only) that I am very glad 2020 brought to us: more comfortable clothing. While I have always considered my clothing to be comfortable, I discovered a whole new level of comfort when we transitioned to being at home all the time, and wider pants definitely played a big part in that.
Now that life is returning to normal, we are ready to feel a little more polished, but not at all ready to give up on comfort. A good pair of culottes can accomplish both - it is the perfect piece to transition from work-from-home to back-at-the-office in style.
The Rogala Stretch Culotte
This plum pair for culottes are from the women’s workwear brand M.M. LaFleur. The material is what they call their ‘Jardigan’ knit - a comfortable and stretchy woven fabric with some weight to it, perfect for maintaining structure and integrity in the garment. This kind of fabric makes the garment look professional, while making you feel like you are wearing a comfortable piece that you could realistically lounge in. In my mind, they are the perfect pants to wear when traveling for business - comfortable for the plane, but polished and chic.
How To Wear Culottes (and look fabulous!)
The wide cut of culottes can overpower your frame if you are not careful with your styling, but paying attention to these elements will make your outfit work.
Balance the volume
A good rule of thumb is balancing the overall volume of your outfit. If you’re wearing a voluminous bottom, opt for a more fitted top. This will help bring some definition to your figure and prevent you from looking like you’re wearing clothes that are a few sizes too big.
Add definition
When wearing an oversized garment, the difference between it looking chic, or lounge-y is in adding some definition to the outfit. I recommend defining your waist by either tucking your top, or by adding a belt. This will add interest to the silhouette of the outfit.
Pay attention to the proportions
Oftentimes when culottes overpower you, it’s not the volume that is doing it, but the proportions of the outfit. Especially if your culottes are cropped, make sure that they hit you at a length where you can make them either ⅓, or ⅔ of your outfit.
