Work / Weekend / Date: Styling One Item For Three Different Occasions

Have you ever purchased an item of clothing that looked great in an ad, but when you wear it, it seems to fall flat? How about when you try to recreate an outfit that you see on Instagram or Pinterest? It comes down to this: a well put-together outfit goes beyond selecting the right clothes. It’s how you style them that makes the difference.

For those of us who dress from capsule wardrobes, knowing how to style the same piece so it can be worn to many different occasions is a necessary skill. A few finishing touches and attention to detail can make even the most basic of clothing look right for any event. Don’t believe me? Call me the next time you see a celebrity wearing jeans or sneakers to a red carpet.

Styling does not mean that you add so many accessories to an outfit that you look like a Christmas tree. Most often, basic things like tucking a shirt, rolling a hem, and how you tie a belt can make a big difference in the final look.

Beyond that, styling and accessories are a great way to show off your personal style. The same pair of jeans and a white T-shirt will look drastically different when worn with a studded black belt and gauged ears, than when worn with dainty gold jewelry and a ribbon in your hair.

They say the devil is in the details… that is certainly true with styling.
